Her reply

It rained cats and dogs the night before hence the weather that morning was still a bit cloudy. As i looked through the window of my room gazing at the skies and trying to predict if it would still rain that morning, i was actually hoping for another downpour. I had nowhere to go that day so I didn't need to worry about the flooded Lagos roads or the traffic that will ensue. For me, it was an avenue to sleep some more and an excuse to laze around throughout the day. As I laid back on the bed to map out a schedule for the day, I felt the need to send her a text. I picked up my phone following my instincts and in about five minutes I had already drafted a message which I sent immediately.

Usually, she replies as soon as she reads my text so I didn't think that day was going to be an exception as I eagerly waited for a reply. After about 30minutes when it seemed like no reply was forthcoming, I started making up excuses as to why she hasn't replied. First my thought wandered around as I tried to remember the events of the previous day, I couldn't remember getting her annoyed in anyway, I've definitely been at my best behavior so that wasn't it. I then thought about the possibility of her having a flat battery but on a second thought, she has never complained about that. I went back to my phone to read through the text I sent again thinking it probably contained something offensive but to the best of my knowledge, there was none. My options as to what really was wrong were becoming slimmer so I just resigned to fate hoping that the rest of the day will provide answers to my questions.

I launched straight into the plans for the day, assuring myself that there was nothing to worry about. Several times, I caught myself thinking about her but almost immediately I realize, I try as much as possible to think of something else.

The sound of an incoming message on my phone made me rush to pick it up, a part of me smiled because I knew she had finally replied. I was anxious about the content but that couldn't be compared to how much I wanted to read the very words that make up her message. This wasn't the first time she was replying to a text I sent but I always felt this same way everytime. Hearing from her was always such a great feeling...the humor with which she wrote, the kind of energy she radiates and mostly the soothing effects her words bring all the time.

In a bid to savour the moment and fully envelope myself in the mood her text sets me, I resisted the urge to unlock my phone immediately. I quickly put it back in my pocket, delaying gratification for a while, waiting for that perfect moment. My younger sister was right beside me at the time, asking questions about something I had promised to help her with earlier today. Because I didn't want her to catch me grinning and smiling like a child, I attended to her quickly, answering her never ending questions and also snapping when need be so I could be left alone in my own world.
Few minutes later, she was gone and you bet I was really glad. Deeping my hands in my pocket, I brought out my most valued treasure at the moment, my phone. I unlocked the phone and went straight to the message icon but I was amazed at what I saw...

It read "Dear customer your data bundle has expired". I know I'm a man and men aren't supposed to cry. Oh but I just wanted to shed a tear...what!!! was this what I've been waiting for, I should have at least checked who sent the text before according so much importance to reading it. I was so disappointed. I'm sure the boys will have a good laugh when they get to hear about this tomorrow.

She still hasn't replied...
